If bailiffs are contacting you

What enforcement agents can and cannot do at your door, and how to slow things down.

You do not have to let them in

Enforcement agents cannot force entry into a home on a first visit for most consumer debts. Keep doors locked, speak through the door or a window, and ask for identification and the debt details in writing.

Vulnerability matters

If someone in the household is seriously ill, disabled, elderly, pregnant or under 18, tell the agent and their firm in writing. They are required to take that into account.

Deal with the underlying debt

Bailiffs are a symptom. Getting the debt itself into a formal plan or challenging the original judgment is what actually stops the visits.
