Priority and non-priority debt explained
Not every bill carries the same consequences. Knowing which is which changes what you pay first.
Priority debts come first
Rent, mortgage, council tax, energy, court fines and tax arrears are priority debts. Falling behind on these can cost you your home, your energy supply or your liberty, so they are paid before anything else.
Non-priority debts
Credit cards, overdrafts, personal loans, catalogues, store cards and buy-now-pay-later balances are non-priority. The consequences are serious but slower: default notices, collection agencies and potentially a county court judgment.
Why the order matters
Most formal debt solutions cover non-priority debts only. Sorting your priority arrears is usually the first step, and it is often the part that brings the most immediate relief.
