Do debts pass to your family?
In almost every case, no. Here's where the exceptions actually lie.
Debts die with the estate
Debts are paid from the deceased person's estate. If there isn't enough, the shortfall is written off. Relatives do not personally inherit someone else's borrowing.
Joint and guaranteed borrowing
The exceptions are joint accounts, jointly held mortgages and debts you personally guaranteed. There, the surviving party remains liable for the full balance.
Watch for pressure
Collectors sometimes contact family members who owe nothing. Ask for the legal basis of the claim in writing, and do not agree to pay anything you are not liable for.
